Traveling with children can be a challenge, especially when it comes to transportation. Safety is paramount, and child seats are crucial. But what about child seats in taxis in the Netherlands? Here you will find the most important information.
Regulations in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, there is an exception to the child seat requirement for taxis. Children under 12 years old and shorter than 1.35 meters do not need to use a child seat in a taxi, provided they sit in the back seat and wear a seatbelt. This is to ensure the flexibility of taxi transport.
However, although it is legally permitted, using a child seat is always safer.
When is a child seat recommended?
Although not mandatory, we strongly recommend booking a taxi with a child seat if possible, especially for longer rides or rides at higher speeds. Your child's safety is most important.
Consider a taxi with a child seat if:
- You have a long journey ahead (e.g., to Schiphol).
- Your child is very young (baby or toddler).
- You want extra peace of mind.
How to book a taxi with a child seat?
Not all taxi companies have child seats available as standard. It is therefore essential to always specify this in advance when booking.
- Booking by phone: Clearly state the age and weight of your child(ren) so that the taxi company can arrange the correct type of seat (baby seat, toddler seat, booster seat).
- Online booking: Many online booking platforms or apps have an option to request a child seat.

Alternatives
If it is not possible to find a taxi with a child seat, make sure your child sits in the back seat and wears the seatbelt correctly. For babies and young children, bringing your own car seat or child seat may be an option, provided it can be safely secured in the taxi.
