Dutch Taxi Regulations Explained: What Are Your Rights?

"

As a taxi passenger in the Netherlands, you have certain rights, and there are rules that taxi drivers and companies must adhere to. Knowing these rules helps you travel safely and fairly. Here is an overview of the most important aspects of Dutch taxi regulations.

1. Legal maximum rates

In the Netherlands, there are legally established maximum rates for taxi transport. This means that a taxi driver may never charge more than these rates. The rates consist of:

  • Start fare: A fixed amount charged as soon as the ride begins.
  • Kilometer fare: An amount per kilometer driven.
  • Time fare: An amount per minute the ride lasts.

Our taxi fare calculator bases its estimates on these maximum rates (2025). The waiting fare is a separate rate that can be applied if the taxi has to wait.

2. The taximeter is mandatory

Every taxi must be equipped with a working and sealed taximeter. The meter must be clearly visible to the passenger, and the price must increase during the ride. At the end of the ride, the driver must show the price displayed on the meter.

3. The blue license plate

An official taxi in the Netherlands can be recognized by its blue license plate with black letters. This indicates that the car is registered as a taxi and complies with legal requirements.

4. The driver's card

The taxi driver must possess a valid driver's card. This card must be visibly present in the taxi, often on the dashboard or sun visor. It displays the driver's name and passport photo.

5. Right to a receipt

After every ride, you are entitled to a receipt. This receipt must include, among other things, the fare, the date, the name of the taxi company, and the license plate number of the taxi. The receipt is important for your administration and in case of any complaints.

6. Filing complaints

Do you disagree with the fare, the service, or do you have another complaint?

  1. Discuss it with the driver first.
  2. Contact the taxi company.
  3. If this does not lead to a solution, you can file a complaint with the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT), the supervisory authority for the taxi industry.

By being aware of these rules, you can confidently and securely use taxi transport in the Netherlands.
